Kathy Kershner Announces Campaign for Open County Council Seat

Former Whatcom County Council member Kathy Kershner announced today that she is seeking election to the open seat in District 4, which encompasses Lynden, Sumas, Everson and Nooksack, along with some areas in North Bellingham.

Kershner is an accomplished leader having retired as a Commissioned Officer in the United States Navy after 22 years of service and currently serving as the Chair of the Whatcom County Republican Party.  She is eager to use the leadership skills learned in the Navy and her prior experience serving on the County Council to better serve the people of our county from the heart of District 4.

Kershner lives in Lynden with her husband, John, and 15-year-old son, Jake. She says there is no better place to settle down and raise a family than in one of the small towns found in District 4.

“We wanted to move to Lynden for a very long time and when the opportunity arose, we jumped on it.”  She says the people living in District 4 deserve to be represented by someone who aligns with their traditional values – family, faith and hard work.

“Our community is special because of the people who live here. I want to work for them -- our farmers, schoolteachers, business owners, and everyone who contributes to this very special place we all call home. Small towns like Sumas, Everson, Nooksack and Lynden are often overlooked by the very Bellingham-centric County Council. It’s past time we had a voice from the heart of the county on the Council.”

Kershner earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1992 from the University of Hawaii and put her leadership talent to work as Director for an organization that provided a wide array of services to families, children and adults with developmental disabilities. In 2003, she formed her own small business evaluating the performance of service providers who support people with developmental disabilities statewide.

Voters elected her to bring common sense leadership to county government, protect the most vulnerable, and serve the county in the true spirit of win-win. Kershner is honored to have served our community on the Whatcom County Council from 2010-2014.

In her first County Council term, Kershner was elected Council Chair by her fellow Council members. She served on the Flood Control District Board of Supervisors, which deals with our many water resource challenges, as well as the County Board of Health. She also served on the Northwest Regional Council and the North Sound Mental Health Advisory Board, which she chaired for two years, as well as the Council Finance Committee, the Council Health Committee, the Airport Advisory Committee and the Council of Governments.

Kershner and her family enjoy the many beautiful reasons to be outdoors in Whatcom County, and in their free time, they raise vegetables in their backyard and enjoy spending time with their grandchildren.
